 by Rav. David Pollina

A fitting first topic to launch "Tushiyah Thoughts" is the knowledge of YHWH.  "Tushiyah" is a Hebrew word for "wisdom", and as Scripture tells us, respect for Him is truly the beginning of wisdom (Prov.9:10).

Knowing someone begins with knowing their name.  How much more important should this be for YHWH?!  God's Name is not "God", or "Lord", such are titles - His personal Name is YHWH, a Hebrew word with a very specific meaning.

While the exact pronunciation is debated, His Name is basically the singular, third person, masculine form of the verb HAYA, "to be".  At the burning bush, He told Moses that His Name was "I AM", then He said His Name was "YHWH" (Ex.3:14-15).  These are not separate Names, they are the same - He says "I AM", we say "HE IS"!

Did you know that His Name appears in the Old Testament over 6,500 times!  Most English Bibles erase His Name, instead of using it, they translate "the LORD" instead.

Next, if we believe that Y'shua is equally God, we must understand His Name as well.  So, how did "Y'shua" become "Jesus"?  This fascinating piece of history is part of a special excerpt (see left) from the book "Reuniting The Covenant", which is available for free download.  Feel free to share this mini e-book with your friends!

One of the roots from which grew the belief that Torah had been 'cancelled on Calvary', is that there is a difference between the God of the 'old' Testament, and the Savior of the 'new'.  While most Christians will agree with the doctrine of the 'trinity', stating that Y'shua (Jesus) was "fully God and fully man", there still remains a distinction - even a difference.

Why so?  Well, if Y'shua is really God, then when He said "obey my commands", it would not be possible to separate the 'old' ones from the 'new' - He would mean ALL of them.

The very definition of "sin" is to fall short of God's standards, His commands.  It becomes much more difficult to 'separate' the commands of Y'shua in the New Testament from those of Yahweh in the 'old' when we realise the true depth of His identity.

Consider this, our 'Tushiyah Thought':

  • Y'shua is distinct from the Father - He prayed TO the Father.

  • Y'shua also said that no one has ever seen or heard the Father, only Him (Jn.1:18, 5:37), and this agrees with the Torah (Ex.33:20)

  • Many people in the Tanakh (Old Testament) personally saw Yahweh.  Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, 70 elders, Solomon...

  • The Tanakh also prophesied that Yahweh Himself would redeem Israel (Ps.130:7-8, Is.43:11, 45:21, Hs.13:4).

  • The Aramaic texts of the New Testament, in many places, specifically call Y'shua "MarYAH", the Aramaic cognate of "YHWH".

So consider in your studies: WHO is Y'shua...

The identity of Messiah as YHWH is a prerequisite for the efficacy of His office!
